We will travel to Malle, our twin town in Belgium, via coach from Hartley Wintney, arriving mid afternoon on the Thursday. Our bikes will meet us there having been transported by lorry.
Our lovely hosts in Malle are arranging an evening reception especially for us. We will set off the following morning to start the 300 mile ride, arriving back in Hartley Wintney mid-afternoon on Monday 26th August.
You will be assisted by our very able support crew which will include our lorry, food car, signposting (front) car, repair vehicle and back marker. Each vehicle will have 2 drivers.
Cyclists will be in groups each day based on a combination of ability as well as sociability. You need to be 16 years or over to participate.
The route through Belgium and Northern France will take in stunning countryside and beautiful towns and villages, and you will be surrounded by fascinating World War battlefield history. It is almost entirely flat the whole way following well-made canal paths and dedicated cycle routes.
At the beginning of Day 3, we will board the ferry with our bikes and cross back over to England, enjoying the wonderful Kent and Sussex villages and roads which only the locals use.
The itinerary is proposed as follows:
We will arrive home between 3pm and 5pm on the Monday, with a ‘welcome home’ party in the new church centre! Community and press invited!
To keep costs down we are booking campsites for all participants. Participants (and support crew) will have the opportunity to ‘upgrade’ to a local hotel at their own cost. It will be up to the individual to book their own hotel accommodation although we will endeavour to recommend suitable low cost hotels close to the campsites.
Cycling 300 miles in four days does require a certain level of ability and fitness. You should be aware that road cycling carries significant dangers. Everyone is required by Belgian law to have high visibility shirts and working bike lights. All support crew and as many cyclists as possible will have first aid training. No one will cycle by themselves but everyone will be in a small group. Each group will have a map.
To enter, the cost per cyclist is £250. This payment will include coach travel out to Malle and return ferry crossing from Dunkirk to Dover. It also includes breakfast, lunch and intermediary break food and drink, campsite pitch and a share of support team costs (fuel, ferry, etc).
For those wishing to join in, we will arrange training rides from April throughout the summer leading up to the event. These rides will be tailored to suit differing levels of fitness and ability and are planned to ensure you reach an adequate level of fitness before the event. You can bring your friends, even if they are not doing the ride. The name of the game is to get fit and have fun out on our bikes. Advice will be given on equipment and of course you will learn to mend a puncture!!!
